Windows 10 introduces Progressive Web Apps (PWAs)

February 08, 2018

The next major update to windows 10 will introduce Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) to the Microsoft Store, according to the latest Windows Blog. Combining the best of the web and native applications, PWAs are websites that behave and function just like a normal app. However, there are some advantages to running a PWA over a traditional application.

PWAs are unique in that they do not require updates to be maintained through the Windows Store, and can instead be updated on the site’s server. In theory, this ensures that users are experiencing the most up-to-date version of an application without any unnecessary overhead. Continuing, PWAs do not require platform specific code — enabling users on most Windows device (and possibly other platforms) to access the app universally.

While publishing standards vary, PWAs are ideally developed to match the best practices of any website, including being mobile responsive, secure (served via HTTPS), and easily discoverable (indexed with search engines).
